GitHub Account Setup

How to request GitHub access and set up your account as a new Dawn Health designer.

Last updated: 18 July 2026

This guide walks you through requesting GitHub access and configuring your account. The process has two parts: submitting an access request via Service Desk, and setting up your GitHub account once approved.

Request access

Find the GitHub request form

Navigate to GitHub > Apply for Access in Github.

Fill out the form

Use the following values:

FieldValue
Is the request for an external user?No
ProductDesign
GitHub TeamDesigners (Read)

Leave all other fields empty.

Submit the request

Click Place Request. Before confirming, check that your email is correct in the Requester field, then click Confirm.

After submitting, wait for Service Desk to approve your request. Approval times may vary.

Set up your account

Once your request is approved, you'll receive an email inviting you to join the Dawn Health GitHub organization.

Accept the invitation

Click the link in the approval email and follow the instructions to join.

Create a GitHub account

If you don't already have one, you'll be prompted to create a GitHub account using your Dawn Health email address.

Follow the naming convention

Your GitHub username must follow the Dawn naming format: [initials]-dawn

For example, if your Dawn initials are JMU, your username should be jmu-dawn.

Re-accept the organization invitation if needed

After creating your account, you may need to find the original invitation email again and click the link a second time to join the Dawn Health organization.

Secure your account

Before you do anything else:

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your GitHub account.
  • Save your recovery codes to 1Password or another secure location.

Don't skip this step

Recovery codes are the only way to regain access if you lose your 2FA device. Store them securely before closing the setup screen.

You're all set

Once your account is set up and your 2FA is configured, you're ready to start working with DS3 repositories.
